This half-day experience begins with hotel pick-up in Madrid and a scenic drive towards the Guadarrama mountains. With your licensed guide, you will explore the Royal Monastery of El Escorial and continue to the striking Valley of the Fallen before returning comfortably to the city.

The drive takes around one hour. Along the way, your guide will introduce the history of Toledo and explain why this hilltop city became one of the most important cultural crossroads of medieval Spain.

Arrival at the monumental complex built by Philip II in the 16th century. From the outside, we take in the immense scale of the building and understand its role as monastery, royal palace and political symbol of the Spanish monarchy.

Inside the monastery we visit the Pantheon of the Kings, the burial place of most Spanish monarchs since the 16th century. This extraordinary baroque chamber offers a fascinating glimpse into the dynastic history of Spain.

A short drive brings us to one of Spain’s most striking and debated monuments. Dominated by the enormous cross rising above the mountains, the basilica carved into the rock opens the door to understanding an important chapter of Spain’s 20th-century history.
