Discover Madrid through the eyes of a local guide on this relaxed walking tour through the historic heart of the city.

Together we explore royal landmarks, medieval streets and lively squares while uncovering the fascinating story of how Madrid grew from a small hilltop town into the capital of a global empire.

This experience is designed as a comfortable and engaging walk through the most important areas of the old city, with plenty of stops to explain the history, architecture and local life that make Madrid such a vibrant place today.

Led by a licensed local guide, this tour combines the main highlights of historic Madrid with the charm of its hidden streets and traditional neighborhoods.

Starting near the Royal Palace, we walk through the historic district known as Madrid de los Austrias, discovering iconic landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. Along the way we explore beautiful streets like Calle Mayor and the lively neighborhood of La Latina, where Madrid’s medieval past is still visible today.

More than a list of monuments, this experience focuses on the stories behind the city — kings and dynasties, fires and transformations, everyday life in old Madrid, and the many layers of history that shaped the Spanish capital.

By the end of the tour you will not only have seen the most important places in historic Madrid, but you will also understand the city and know how to continue exploring it like a local.

Journey Through the Heart of Madrid

This walking route takes you through the historic heart of Madrid, connecting its most important landmarks with the streets and squares that shaped the city.

1. Plaza de la Ópera — Where Our Journey Begins

Your guide can meet you at your hotel in central Madrid or, if you prefer, in Plaza de la Ópera next to the Royal Theatre.

From here we introduce the origins of Madrid and how a small medieval town eventually became the capital of a global empire.

2. Royal Palace & Almudena Cathedral — Kings and Dynasties

Walk to the spectacular Royal Palace, the largest royal residence in Western Europe.

Discover the story of the old Alcázar that once stood here, the great fire that destroyed it, and how the Bourbon kings reshaped Madrid.

3. Calle Mayor — The Historic Artery of Madrid

Follow one of the oldest streets in the city, once the ceremonial route used by kings, nobles and royal processions.

Along the way we uncover stories of medieval markets, noble houses and curious historical episodes.

4. La Latina — Medieval Streets & Local Life

Explore one of Madrid’s most authentic neighborhoods, famous for its narrow streets and lively atmosphere.

Here we discover how the medieval city expanded and why this area still preserves the soul of old Madrid.

5. Plaza Mayor — The Heart of Habsburg Madrid

On the way we walk along historic streets including the famous Cava Baja, once one of the main entrances to the city for travelers and merchants, before reaching Plaza Mayor.

Discover how this iconic square became the stage for markets, royal celebrations and dramatic events.

6. Puerta del Sol — The Center of Spain

Finish the tour in Madrid’s most famous square, home to the Kilometer Zero marker and the beloved Bear and Strawberry Tree statue, the symbol of the city.
